A Volgodonsk resident was convicted in Kuban of treason.

A court in Krasnodar sentenced a Volgodonsk resident to a lengthy prison term, finding him guilty of collecting information for Ukrainian intelligence services.

The 25-year-old defendant's case was heard by the Krasnodar Regional Court. The young man was found guilty of treason (Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code carries a sentence of twelve to twenty years in prison).

According to the prosecution, the Volgodonsk resident collaborated with Ukrainian intelligence services for monetary compensation. The court found that he was collecting information for the Security Service of Ukraine about fuel and energy facilities located in Krasnodar.

The court sentenced the defendant to 12 years and six months in a maximum-security penal colony with one year of restricted freedom, the Krasnodar Regional Prosecutor's Office reported.

The department noted that the court also confiscated the mobile phone used to commit the crime, as well as funds received by the defendant "from his handler," for state use. The amount of this reward was not specified in the statement.

The prosecutor's office did not specify when exactly and under what circumstances the defendant was detained, or whether he admitted his guilt. The names of defendants in most treason cases are hidden from the public records on the court's website.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that in April, the Krasnodar Regional Court sentenced a 63-year-old resident of Novorossiysk to 13 years in prison for treason. According to investigators and the court, the ship's cook, wanting to move to the United States, informed her handlers about the location of ships.

On April 22, it was reported that a resident of the Volgograd region was arrested on suspicion of passing information about the deployment of Defense Ministry units to Ukrainian intelligence.
