"Demos" Centre: the situation with human rights in Chechnya has not changed

Tortures, kidnappings, murders and various other violations of human rights continue in Chechnya. This is the topic of the report disseminated by the "Demos" Moscow Information-Analytical Centre. According to Tatiana Lokshina, head of the Centre, despite the attempts of the Kremlin to exhibit the region as returning to normal life, "nothing has normalized in it in fact."

The report runs that from the beginning of the second war campaign, from three to five thousand persons have been kidnapped in Chechnya. "Yes, we have grounds to be happy with newly-painted buildings, clean streets and fountains in Grozny... But the situation with human rights remains monstrous," Ms. Lokshina said.

We remind you that the International Association "World and Human Rights" is going to address the PACE with a request to consider the Chechnya issue at the forthcoming regular PACE session to take place on April 16- 20, 2007.
