Armenian MPs are considering bill on help to victims of 2008 riots

The bill put forward today for consideration by Armenian MPs envisages to render help to the victims and successors of those ten persons who perished during clashes on March 1-2, 2008, Lena Nazaryan, the Vice-Speaker has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that during the riots on March 1-2, 2008, ten persons perished in Yerevan. The clashes were caused by people's disagreement with the victory of Serzh Sargsyan at the presidential election. Robert Kocharyan, the then President of Armenia, declared the state of emergency in the country.

On February 15, 2019, investigators reported the completion of the inquiry into the case on the riots on March 1-2, 2008, in Yerevan. Charges are brought against Robert Kocharyan, the second president of Armenia, and other former high-ranking officials.

The bill on helping the victims of riots was submitted to the Armenian Parliament on April 16 and was today presented at the sitting. It was initiated by Lena Nazaryan and Alen Simonyan, Vice-Speakers from the ruling political force "My Step", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports with reference to the live broadcast of the session on the Parliament's YouTube channel.

Lena Nazaryan, a Vice-Speaker, has explained, while presenting the bill to the MPs, that it provides for help to the successors of the ten perished persons, as well as to those injured, who received moderate or grave traumas during the clashes. According to her story, according to the Special Investigation Service (SIS), 63 persons have been recognized as victims.
