Chechen inmates of colony in Mordovia pierce their stomachs in protest

At least eight convicts, including residents of Chechnya, committed a mass self-mutilation in protest against the actions of the colony administration in Mordovia. The FSIN (Russian Federal Penitentiary Service) considers the protest to be unjustified.

The high-security colony, where the incident occurred, keeps convicted former law enforcers, the "Kavkaz.Realii" reports.

A brother of one of the inmates from Chechnya told that he twice his stomach tore open: in protest against threats of violence, and the second time – in protest against beatings.

"Three inmates drove pins or nails into their stomachs. Gangrene began in them. Then, seven inmates more 'cut their bellies open' in support of these three, so that they could be taken to hospital. On March 17, one Russian inmate did the same," the "Chechnya Today" quotes Idris Vachaev, the brother of an inmate from Chechnya, as saying.
