Deaths, wounds, surrenders in Chechnya

A car was found at about 3.00 pm on 8 April in Grozny's Leninskii district with the bodies of two police officers, one of them in the boot, says Chechnya's Ministry of Internal Affairs. Both had marks of gunshot wounds. Sultan Abubakarov, CK correspondent.

A bomb was triggered at 10.05 am in Pervomaiskaia St in the centre of Grozny when a car with officers of the Grozny District Division of Internal Affairs was passing by. Two police officers received shrapnel wounds, according to the Internal Affairs Ministry. The high speed at which the car was going saved their lives, as the blast occurred with a split-second delay, says Interfax.

Adam Tepsurkayev, a field commander on the wanted list and a close associate of Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev, was killed on the outskirts of Grozny, Chechnya, on 8 April. Tepsurkayev is reported to have planned terrorist acts against the heads of five district administrations in the republic. Federal representatives say there is much evidence he had taken part in preparing terrorist acts employing cars stuffed with explosives, as ordered by Basayev, and in an armed assault on an administrative building in Grozny's Oktiabrskii district on 21 August 2004, which led to dozens of police officers and civilians dying, says Novosti news agency. Tepsurkayev is also believed to be involved in a number of killings of Chechen police officers, says NEWSru.com.

A 23-year-old resident of Kulary, Urus-Martan district, gave himself up in Grozny's Staropromyslovskii district on 8 April. A 28-year-old resident of Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district gave himself up in the Gudermes district on the same day. Both were members of illegal armed groups reporting to Shamil Basayev, the Regional Operations Headquarters on the Counter-terrorist Operation in the North Caucasus told Novosti.
