The Baku court has dismissed the complaint of Azad Gasanov, an activist of the "Musavat" Party, about the refusal to transfer him to house arrest. Then, Gasanov went on a hunger strike, claiming solidarity with the blogger Mekhman Guseinov and violation of his rights at the SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The prosecutor and the investigator have asked the judge, who is running the case of the second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharyan, to recuse himself, because of his friendship with another figurant in the case. These petitions are artificially protracting Kocharyan's release from custody, his advocate has stated.

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has begun considering a new lawsuit lodged by residents of Makhachkala against the construction of a temple in the "Ak-Gel" Park. They have reported violations in adopting the build-up rules of Makhachkala.

The check was initiated in connection with complaints from Ingush policemen who claimed they had got a box of mandarin oranges for 52 people as New Year's gifts, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported with specifying that the fruits comprised a part of the policemen's ration. Users of social networks believe that authors of the video will be dismissed from the police.

The Armenian Armed Forces shelled a border checkpoint near the village of Kemerli and damaged an excavator belonging to a civilian, the Azerbaijani Frontier Service reported on January 7. The Azerbaijani party rejects the investigation mechanism of border incident, proposed by Armenia, the head of the Armenian General Staff has stated.

In 2018, the criminal prosecution of Oyub Titiev in Chechnya, the arson at the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" office in Nazran, and the attack on Sirazhudin Datsiev in Makhachkala marked a new level of pressure on rights defenders in Northern Caucasus. However, the human rights offices in Ingushetia and Dagestan did not stop their activities, and a campaign was launched in defence of Oyub Titiev.
