"Georgian Dream" demanded to ban Gakharia's party

The ruling party has updated its lawsuit in the Constitutional Court of Georgia, demanding to ban the party of former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. The number of opposition parties in the lawsuit has reached five.

As reported by "Caucasian Knot", in October 2025, the ruling party "Georgian Dream" filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court, in which it demanded to recognize as unconstitutional and ban three parties: "United National Movement", "Coalition for Changes", and "Strong Georgia - Lelo".

"Georgian Dream" has appealed to the Constitutional Court with a demand to ban the party "Gakharia - For Georgia". The updated constitutional lawsuit has already been submitted to the Constitutional Court, reports "Interpressnews" today, citing the press service of the parliament.

In "Georgian Dream", they state that the party of the former Prime Minister "does not recognize either the constitutional order or the legitimacy of power" and "in such conditions does not differ from the spirit of the activities of others", the agency writes.

The Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili stated that the party "For Georgia" is part of a united opposition front with the "National Movement". Gakharia himself and his party previously rejected such accusations, reports JAMnews today.

Initially, "Georgian Dream" sought to ban the "United National Movement", "Coalition for Changes", and "Strong Georgia - Lelo" with its lawsuit. In April, they added the "Federalists". Now there are five opposition parties in the lawsuit. "Georgian Dream" hopes that the Constitutional Court will make a decision before January, the publication writes.

Let us remind you that Giorgi Gakharia is a former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and former Prime Minister of Georgia. He leads the opposition party "For Georgia", which received 12 mandates in the 2024 parliamentary elections. Gakharia left Georgia in the summer of 2025. In November of the same year, a court in Tbilisi arrested Gakharia in absentia, accused of official crimes during his tenure as Minister of Internal Affairs.

On March 2, nine opposition political forces announced the creation of the "Opposition Alliance". The participants of the union included the parties "Akhalis", "Girchi - More Freedom", "Droa", "United National Movement", "European Georgia", "Strategy Agmashenebeli", "Federalists", "Freedom Square", and "National Democratic Party". The goals of the alliance, negotiations for which were held since December 2025, are named as the cessation of the "autocratic regime" of Bidzina Ivanishvili, restoration of Georgia's Euro-Atlantic course, and ensuring democratic governance, security, and well-being of citizens.
