The failure in the energy system left the residents of Georgia without electricity.

A massive blackout occurred in Georgia, leaving all regions of the country without electricity. Due to the failure, the operation of pumping stations has been suspended, and residents of Tbilisi, Rustavi, and Mtskheta have been warned about possible water supply issues.

The power outage occurred around 0:10 local time (23:10 MSK on July 23). Initially, reports indicated a power outage in Tbilisi, but it soon became known that other cities, including Batumi, Kutaisi, Telavi, Kobuleti, and Kazbegi, were also without power. Later, it was revealed that the blackout affected the entire territory of Georgia.

Authorities did not issue any operational statements about the incident. Levan Mebonia, the director of the Inguri Hydroelectric Power Station, could not explain to journalists the reason for the nationwide power outage, stating that he is "trying to find out."

“When asked if the Inguri hydroelectric power station, which provides most of Georgia's electricity, is currently operational, Mebonia replied that he does not know,” reported the Pirveli television company.

The company Georgian Water and Power confirmed reports of the power outage “across the country,” warning that some cities may experience interruptions in water supply.

“The operation of GWP pumping stations has been automatically suspended, resulting in some residents of Tbilisi, Rustavi, and Mtskheta possibly experiencing limited or low water pressure,” Tbilisi life quoted the company's message.

Representatives of the Georgian State Electric System publicly commented on the blackout more than an hour later, stating that they do not know its cause. They assured that they are working “on the prompt restoration of electricity supply.”

“The agency denies the validity of a statement circulating on social media that the cause of the massive outage was allegedly an accident on the power line connecting Georgia and Turkey,” notes Pirveli.

The Ministry of Energy of Abkhazia stated that the republic also remained without electricity due to a “systemic” failure at the Inguri Hydroelectric Power Station. "The process of restoring electricity supply to the republic is underway," quotes the message from Abkhaz officials, Interfax.
