A Stavropol resident was convicted of financing terrorism.

According to the court and investigators, in January 2021, the man, a supporter of radical views, transferred 5,300 rubles to a previously known member of a terrorist organization. The prosecution claims he transferred this amount to continue the activities of the banned group and commit crimes.

Considering the position of the state prosecutor, the court found him guilty of aiding terrorist activity and sentenced the defendant to 12 years in prison. He will serve the first five years in prison, and the remainder in a maximum-security penal colony with six months of restricted freedom, the Stavropol Krai Prosecutor's Office press service reported today on its website.

The sentence has not entered into legal force, the statement noted. The man's charge of financing terrorism (Part 1.1 of Article 205.1 of the Russian Criminal Code) carries a sentence of eight to fifteen years in prison.

The supervisory agency did not name the convicted person, nor did it specify which banned group the money was intended for.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that investigators in Stavropol suspect a local resident of providing financial support to members of a terrorist organization. A Pyatigorsk resident has been charged with two counts of assisting terrorism and one count of financing terrorist activity.
