119 Azerbaijani families returned to the Jabrayil region.

Today, 535 members of Azerbaijani families who fled the Jabrayil region during the Karabakh conflict returned to the village of Shukurbeyli.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on May 21, 165 former internally displaced persons (IDPs) returned to the village of Shukurbeyli (Shyukurbeyli) in the Jabrayil region.

Today, members of 119 families (535 people) of former internally displaced persons (IDPs) were sent to the village of Shukurbeyli in the Jabrayil district, APA reports.

These families were previously temporarily resettled in various parts of the country - primarily in dormitories, sanatoriums, and administrative buildings, Trend reports.

Returning to their hometowns thrilled the displaced persons

Former internally displaced person Sabir Byabirov shared his joy at returning to his native village. "I left the Jabrayil district with my wife and son, and now I'm returning with my grandson... We waited a long time for the day of our move. Thank God, this day has come," Report quotes him as saying today.

I left the Jabrayil district at 35, and I'm returning at 70.

The Jabrayil region came under Azerbaijani control following the 44-day Karabakh War in 2020. President Ilham Aliyev announced on October 4, 2020 that Azerbaijani troops had occupied the city of Jabrayil (Armenian name: Jrakan). In November 2023, shortly after the end of hostilities, Azerbaijani authorities announced plans to return 34,500 families (140,000 people) to the former Karabakh conflict zone by the end of 2026. Despite the construction of roads, energy facilities, and housing, the pace of resettlement is constrained by mine danger, a lack of jobs, and unresolved land use issues, analysts noted in April 2026.

Earlier, Azerbaijani residents who returned to Karabakh told the "Caucasian Knot" that they were settling in and finding work. Despite persistent problems with employment and infrastructure, the displaced people report improved living conditions.

On September 19-20, 2023, Azerbaijan conducted large-scale military operations and took control of the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, after which a mass exodus of the Armenian population began. By October 7, 2023, 100,632 internally displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh had arrived in Armenia, and by September 2024, only 14 Armenians remained in the region.
