Houses and roads flooded in Chechnya after heavy rainfall

At least five residential buildings were flooded in the Chechen village of Alkhan-Yurt after heavy rains. Damage to roads and houses was also reported in the Sharoi and Shali districts of the republic.

Heavy rainfall in Chechnya led to flooding in at least four districts of the republic.

For example, in the village of Alkhan-Yurt in the Urus-Martan district, five houses were flooded. The municipality is providing assistance to local residents, the republic's Ministry of Emergency Situations reported today. The ministry noted that a storm warning due to deteriorating weather is in effect in Chechnya from May 19 to 20.

In the Sharoi District, heavy rains have damaged homes and roads. Flooding has caused cracks in building walls and road surfaces, and there is a threat of mudslides, the Chechnya Today news agency reports, citing Ramazan Magomedov, head of the municipal administration.

Flooding of homes has also been recorded in the Shali and Itum-Kalinsky districts of the republic. River levels have risen, and landslides have intensified, Grozny-Inform reported.

Due to precipitation, some residents of the Urus-Martan and Nadterechny districts, as well as the Argun district and Grozny, were left without power. Power companies are working on high alert, restoring the power supply, Interfax-Yug reports.

Moderate rainfall continues in the Shatoi district, while precipitation has ceased in other areas, TASS-Kavkaz reports, citing the Chechen Ministry of Emergency Situations.

According to authorities, 3,235 homes and 92 socially significant facilities were damaged by flooding in Chechnya in March and April. More than 500 road sections, 55 bridges, and eight hydraulic structures were damaged. By April 27, Chechen authorities had received more than 29,000 applications from residents of the republic for flood compensation. On April 30, the head of the republic's government, Magomed Daudov, announced that approximately 1,500 people were evacuated from the flooded area, and 863 homes were damaged or completely destroyed.

For families who lost their homes completely, 143 houses were built in Novoye Benoy and Gudermes in less than a month and a half. Authorities reported "lightning-fast" completion of the construction, although high-quality construction of brick cottages typically takes at least several months. Residents have many complaints about the quality of such housing, an activist told the "Caucasian Knot."

Floods caused by torrential rains began in the North Caucasus in late March and have become some of the most devastating in recent years.
