Elections for the head of Dagestan have been announced for September.

Today, the position of Head of the Supreme Court of Dagestan Shchukin was approved, which is connected with the appointment of Fyodor Shchukin as Acting Head of Dagestan.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," Vladimir Putin signed a decree today dismissing Dagestan Head Sergei Melikov, and appointed Fyodor Shchukin as Acting Head of the Republic.

Elections for the head of Dagestan are expected to be held in September 2026, according to Zaur Askenderov, speaker of the republic's parliament. "Fyodor Shchukin will serve as acting head of Dagestan until the fall." "Preliminary elections will be held in September 2026," TASS quoted him as saying.

"Shchukin will soon appoint the chairman of the republic's government, and he will then begin work on forming a new cabinet," Askenderov clarified.

It should be noted that today the High Qualification Collegium of Judges granted the application of Shchukin, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Dagestan, to terminate his powers due to his honorable retirement.

"Shchukin interrupted his vacation and is in the republic," RIA Novosti quoted a source in the collegium as saying.

As a reminder, Melikov failed to stabilize the situation in the republic as head of Dagestan. Unrest at Makhachkala airport, protests against mobilization, and terrorist attacks in Makhachkala and Derbent resonated across the country, analysts noted. They noted that the sluggish response to the flooding in the spring of 2026 was the final factor leading to his resignation.
