A military court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Rasul Umarov to a lengthy prison term, finding him guilty of financially supporting Islamic State* militants.

The Southern District Military Court has been hearing the case of Rasul Umarov, accused of financing terrorism (Part 1.1 of Article 205.1 of the Russian Criminal Code carries a sentence of eight to fifteen years in prison), since February 2025. His sentence was announced on March 31.

According to the prosecution, in December 2020, Umarov, while in Kislovodsk, transferred money from his account to the account of a member of the banned international terrorist organization Islamic State*. The court concluded that he thereby facilitated terrorist activity, the court's press service reported.

Rasul Umarov was previously sentenced to imprisonment in another case by the Kislovodsk City Court. Based on the combined sentences, the Southern District Military Court sentenced Umarov to 10 years in a maximum-security penal colony, with the first four years to be served in prison.

Caucasian Knot has not yet received any comments from Umarov or his lawyer regarding plans to appeal the sentence.

Rasul Umarov was born in July 1990 in the city of Ust-Dzheguta in Stavropol Krai (now Karachay-Cherkessia), according to his entry in the Rosfinmonitoring register of terrorists and extremists. Umarov's name was added to the list on October 4, 2024, according to a Telegram bot tracking updates to the list. The public file on the Kislovodsk City Court website contains no information about Umarov's previous sentence.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that the Nalchik Garrison Military Court arrested a former serviceman accused of eight counts of financing terrorism for two months.
