The court extended the arrest of Ali Kerimli.

The detention of Ali Karimli, leader of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has been extended for another four months. His defense considers this decision illegal and politically motivated.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on November 29, 2025, State Security Service officers detained Ali Karimli and his advisor, Mammad Ibrahim, a member of the Presidium of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA). Both opposition figures were arrested for two and a half months, until February 13. Karimli is charged under Article 278.1 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan (actions aimed at the violent seizure of power or the violent change of the constitutional order of the state). He denied the charges and called his criminal case political persecution.

The Sabail District Court of Baku today granted the State Security Service of Azerbaijan's request to extend Ali Karimli's detention for another four months, until June 13, the PFPA press service told a Caucasian Knot correspondent.

"This is an absolutely illegal decision. Accusing Ali Karimli of attempting to seize power, and especially of 'conspiracy' with Ramiz Mehdiyev, is absurd and devoid of any legal basis. Moreover, this decision is clearly political. It is directed not only against Ali Karimli, but also against the political opposition in general, and aims to destroy it," PFPA Deputy Chairman Seymur Hazi told a Caucasian Knot correspondent.

According to him, Karimli continues to refuse to testify "due to the absurdity of the charges." Hazi also announced that the defense will appeal the court's decision.

An employee of the Sabail District Court confirmed the extension of Karimli's arrest by four months. Caucasian Knot was unable to obtain comment from the State Security Service of Azerbaijan.
