The sentence against the former head of the Untsukulsky district has been upheld.

Shamil Magomedov, the former head of Dagestan's Untsukul district, who was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison for extortion and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, failed to obtain a reduced sentence.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," in early July, a court in Makhachkala sentenced former head of the Untsukul district, Shamil Magomedov, to seven and a half years in a maximum-security penal colony, finding him guilty of illegal possession of weapons and extortion.

According to the court, in April 2011, the former head of the district administration, in collusion with Ibragim Gadzhidadaev, the leader of the illegal armed group "Gimrinskaya," who was killed in 2013, extorted $400,000 from a local businessman under threats of murder, Interfax reported today.

In August 2020, Magomedov was detained by law enforcement officers. During a search of his home, illegally stored firearms and ammunition were discovered and confiscated.

The Leninsky District Court of Makhachkala sentenced Shamil Magomedov to 7.5 years in a maximum security penal colony for extortion 1 and illegal possession of weapons 2 . The convicted man appealed the verdict to the Supreme Court of Dagestan, but it was upheld and entered into legal force.

"The Supreme Court of Dagestan upheld the first-instance court's verdict and dismissed the appeal," the agency quoted a source as saying.

"Caucasian Knot" also reported that a court in Makhachkala sentenced Sagid Murtazaliev, former head of the Pension Fund branch in Dagestan, in absentia to nine years in prison for abuse of office and fraud.
