A Volgodonsk resident was arrested for desecrating a monument to the commander of the Pskov paratroopers.

In Volgodonsk, a monument to Hero of Russia Sergei Molodov, who commanded the 6th company of the Pskov paratroopers, was doused with brilliant green and defaced with graffiti. A local resident has been detained and charged with desecrating monuments.

According to investigators, the incident occurred in Volgodonsk on December 18.

Utility workers discovered that the bust of Molodov had been doused with brilliant green and defaced with crosses. CCTV footage revealed the perpetrator, 1rnd.ru reported on December 23. The 46-year-old man who desecrated the monument has been detained; his motives are unknown. He is charged with committing a crime under Article 243.3 of the Russian Criminal Code, reports Bloknot-Volgodonsk. The monument to Guards Major Sergei Molodov was erected in Volgodonsk on 30 Years of Victory Street on December 5, 2006. The sculpture was designed by Yegor Derdiyaschenko. The adjacent square was later also named after Molodov.

Sergei Molodov, commander of the 6th Company of Pskov Paratroopers, died on January 28, 2000, in the Argun Gorge of Chechnya. The company's fighters engaged a detachment of field commanders Shamil Basayev and Khattab near the Chechen village of Ulus-Kert. Eighty-four of the 90 Russian servicemen, including 13 officers, were killed. Four more were wounded.
