A soldier from Kabardino-Balkaria was convicted of rape and evading military service.

A former serviceman from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic was sentenced to 15 years in a maximum-security penal colony for rape, causing grievous bodily harm, and evading military service during mobilization.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot," on September 24, 2022, Parts 2.1, 3.1, and 5 of Article 337, concerning unauthorized abandonment of a unit or place of service during mobilization, were amended to the Russian Criminal Code. The amendments provide for imprisonment for up to 10 years. Tightening of laws after the announcement of mobilization led to harsher sentences for absence from a military unit.

A serviceman named Maremukov was found guilty on November 7 under Part 1 of Article 118 (Causing grievous bodily harm through negligence), Part 2 of Article 131 (Rape), Part 2 of Article 132 (Violent sexual acts), and Part 5 of Article 337 (Abandonment of a unit without leave) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the Nalchik Garrison Military Court reported on its VKontakte page.

"During mobilization, the man failed to report for duty at a military hospital stationed in Rostov-on-Don. He was later detained by police in the city of Nartkala. The court also found that in January In 2025, in the village of Kakhun, he negligently caused serious bodily harm to a local resident. Several months later, in the city of Nartkala, he committed other sexual acts <...> causing serious bodily harm," the court said.

Maremukov had previously been convicted of a serious crime for which he had an outstanding conviction.

The defendant, Maremukov, did not admit to rape, having confessed to the other crimes charged against him, the court clarified.

The Nalchik Garrison Military Court sentenced the former serviceman to 15 years' imprisonment in a maximum-security penal colony.

The court's press service did not provide the defendant's name. His name is hidden from the case file on the court's website.

As a reminder, on September 21, 2022, Vladimir Putin announced partial mobilization. On October 28 of that year, the Minister of Defense reported to the president on its completion, but no corresponding decree followed. Legal experts concluded that a presidential decree was not needed to end partial mobilization, Putin's press secretary explained.
