Teenager arrested in Stavropol under terrorism case

The court has arrested a 17-year-old resident of Mikhailovsk, suspected under the article on organizing terrorist activities. The teenager is accused of social media posts and faces 15 to 20 years in penal colony.

The arrested teen is suspected of organizing terrorist activities; his home was searched, the TASS Agency has reported today, citing the press service of the Stavropol Territorial Branch of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

"A criminal case has been opened against a 17-year-old resident of the town of Mikhailovsk in the Shpakovsky District. He is suspected of committing a crime under Part 1 of Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Organizing the activities of a terrorist organization). The court has chosen a freedom preventive measure in the form of detention," the TASS quotes the Branch’s statement.

Part 1 of the above Criminal Code article provides for 15 to 20 years of freedom deprivation; no alternative sanctions are envisaged.

According to investigators, the teenager, being a supporter of an "international terrorist organization", banned in Russia, from August to October 2023, placed "posts with propaganda of a banned ideology" in a social network.

"According to the conducted study, the posts encouraged the commission of violent, destructive and terrorist acts of ideological nature," the Branch has concluded.
