Rostov-on-Don resident sentenced to long term under treason article

The Rostov Regional Court has sentenced a 56-year-old resident of the Rostov Region, whom law enforcers had accused of transferring money to a Ukrainian account, to 12 years of strict regime.

According to the prosecution, in 2022, the man transferred money to a Ukrainian bank account "in favour of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the Rostov Regional Prosecutor's Office has reported. Investigators and the court have treated the man's motive as his desire to counteract the "Russia’s special military operation (SMO)."

The convict has been sentenced to 12 years in a strict regime penal colony with a further year's freedom restriction, and a fine of 200,000 roubles. The article on high treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) provides for twelve to twenty years of freedom deprivation, and in some cases – the life imprisonment.

The convict’s name is not indicated in the case card that is present in the court's website. The trial was held behind closed doors; the verdict was announced on June 4, the case card says.

So far, the "Caucasian Knot" has no comments of the convict or his advocate regarding the prosecution's version of events.
