Samir Ashurov stops his hunger strike

A court in Baku did not take into account a Samir Ashurov’s complaint about pressure from the police and refused to mitigate the pre-trial restriction measure for the period of investigation, an advocate of Samir Ashurov reported. The activist stopped his hunger strike because of deteriorating health state.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on the evening of April 19, Samir Ashurov was detained in the Nizami District. The activist was suspected of attacking a man with a knife. Samir Ashurov himself called the case falsified, complained about being beaten by the police, and went on a hunger strike in protest.

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has considered a complaint against the Samir Ashurov’s arrest, and the defence had filed a motion to mitigate the pre-trial restriction measure for the period of investigation, Elchin Sadygov, an advocate of Samir Ashurov, has told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent. “We also pointed out the lack of reliable primary evidence. Only policemen are witnesses in the case,” the advocate noted.

According to Elchin Sadygov, the activist complained about the physical and moral pressure after his detention. However, the court ignored the Samir Ashurov’s complaints about the pressure from the police and dismissed the complaint.

Nurana Ashurova, a spouse of Samir Ashurov, reported that her husband stopped his hunger strike. “My husband’s health state worsened because of the hunger strike, and he began to experience severe stomach pains and dizziness,” Nurana Ashurova stated.
