Case on mass riots in a Vladikavkaz penal colony sent to court

An investigation into a case against a native of Dagestan, accused of participating in mass riots in a Vladikavkaz penal colony, has been completed.

According to the investigators’ version, on October 15, 2021, the prisoners organized riots, which were accompanied by pogroms, arsons, and destruction of property. The defendant destroyed property in order to achieve a weakening of the conditions of the penal colony regime, investigators suggested.

Let us remind you that according to the information of the Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN), during searches, two prisoners from a punishment cell of a high-security penal colony in Vladikavkaz refused to obey the warders’ demands and called on other convicts to rebel. According to the investigators’ version, at least 200 prisoners participated in the riots. On the other day, 36 of the most active rioters were transferred to a high-security penal colony in Dagestan.

According to sources, the riots in the penal colony took place after the appointment of a new chief of the FSIN’s Department for North Ossetia, when the new administration toughened its attitude towards prisoners. Meanwhile, five days before the riot, prisoner Albert Yuldashev was stabbed after a quarrel with another convict and died. His mother suggested that the murder became possible because of gross violations of the regime in the penal colony and requested President Vladimir Putin to organize an investigation and take harsh measures against the warders of the penal colony. On November 1, 2021, it became known that the assistant warden had been involved as a suspect in a case on negligence.
