Dagestani activist Ruslan Magomedov achieves cancellation of his fine

In Makhachkala, a court cancelled the decision of the chief of the district police department to fine activist Ruslan Magomedov, who was detained at a picket in support of freedom of speech.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 25, Ruslan Magomedov, also known under the pseudonym of Ruslan Akhalchi, was detained at a picket in support of freedom of speech in Makhachkala and spent 48 hours in a police station. All the time the defender was not allowed to visit him. Before being released, Ruslan Magomedov was handed a protocol on a fine for petty hooliganism. The activist associated his detention with the mention of Alexei Navalny* on a poster.

On January 25, Ruslan Magomedov held a picket in Makhachkala against the persecution of critics of the authorities. The inscription on his poster was almost identical to the inscription on the poster of mathematician Vazif Meilanov, who on January 25, 1980 held an action in protest against the detention of Academician Andrei Sakharov, but on the Ruslan Magomedov’s poster, the name of Sakharov name was replaced with the name of Navalny*.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that a court in Makhachkala stopped the persecution of activist Eduard Ataev, who was detained at a protest action against the extraction of natural resources in the village of Endirei on January 25.

* Alexei Navalny is a founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), a non-commercial organization that is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the register of NCOs performing the functions of a foreign agent. The NCO was also recognized by the court as extremist and banned in Russia. Alexei Navalny’s headquarters were recognized as extremist organizations, and their activities were terminated by the court’s decision. On January 25, the “Rosfinmonitoring” (Federal Financial Monitoring Service of the Russian Federation) included Alexei Navalny in the register of extremists and terrorists.
