Parliamentary opposition urges to support Gagloev in presidential election in South Ossetia

Opposition MPs issued an appeal in which they called on residents of South Ossetia to vote in the second round of the presidential election for Alan Gagloev.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that South-Ossetian presidential candidate Alan Gagloev won 36.9% of the votes, while incumbent President Anatoly Bibilov gained 33.5%, and they entered the second round of presidential election, the Central Election Commission (CEC) reported after counting 95% of the ballots. According to the CEC, the exact results, taking into account the votes from Moscow and Sukhumi, will be known in the coming days.

Fourteen members of the parliament of South Ossetia issued an appeal to voters. “We and you have gone together through a difficult path of struggle against the lawlessness and arbitrariness of the current government. For several years we have been resisting flagrant violations of the law, relying on the support of our voters, the vast majority of the peoples of South Ossetia. At the recent presidential election held in the republic on Sunday, our people actively supported the need for change,” reads the text of the document, the original of which was posted on the Alan Gagloev’s Telegram channel on the evening of April 12.

“The first round of the election showed a clear leader: opposition candidate Alan Gagloev got a mandate of confidence from our people. We believe that on the eve of the second round of the election, all those who care about the future of our republic should unite (...) We express our full support for the candidacy of Alan Eduardovich Gagloev and his programmes,” the MPs stated in their appeal.

The appeal was signed by 11 MPs.

The second round of the presidential election in South Ossetia will take place presumably on May 8, reports Emilia Gagieva, the head of the republic’s CEC.
