Georgian activists announce patrolling Azerbaijani border

Activists of the "Strength in Unity" movement decided to start patrolling the territory of the "David Garedja" Monastery Complex since May 7, in order to prevent Azerbaijani border guards from blocking the road to the monasteries.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 25, it became known that for several days, monks, pilgrims and tourists could not get to the "Udabno" Monastery, located on the territory of the oldest Georgian cave complex "David Garedja", which was blocked by Azerbaijani border guards. The conflict was resolved after negotiations at the level of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MFAs) of the two countries.

The dispute over one of the most important cultural and religious landmarks of Georgia, the "David Garedja" Monastic Complex, continues because of the unresolved issue of the demarcation of the Georgian-Azerbaijani between. The issue of the common border section will be resolved by the end of the year, the Georgian President, Salome Zurabishvili, stated during her visit to Azerbaijan in February.

Activists of the "Strength in Unity" movement decided to patrol the "David Garedja" territory and intervene if the Azerbaijani border guards continue to prevent people from passing to the monastery complex, David Katsarava, the spokesman for the movement, has explained. "We decided to start peaceful civilian patrolling since Tuesday [May 7] on the paths used by tourists," the "Rustavi-2" TV Company reports in its website today.

According to Mr Katsarava, it is planned to patrol 3-4 times a week, Channel One of the Georgian TV reports on its website.
