Israel refuses to officially recognize Armenian Genocide

The Israeli parliament has rejected the legislative initiative of the MP, who offered to recognize the Armenian Genocide and reminded about the Holocaust.

The bill on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide was submitted to the parliament by Yair Lapid, the leader of the Israeli oppositional "Yesh Atid" Party back in December 2017. Mr Lapid, in his own explanation, did it in response to the reconciliation of Israel with Turkey in 2016, which the oppositionist considers a diplomatic mistake. In the bill itself, the need to recognize the Armenian Genocide was justified by the fact that Jews, as a people who had survived the Holocaust, should express sympathy for such a tragedy of the Armenian people.

On February 14, the bill was not approved by the Knesset – the Israeli parliament.

"The bill was doomed from the very beginning," said Doctor Alexander Tsinker, a co-chairman of the international public forum "Israel-Armenia", noting that after discussion at the Knesset session, the issue on recognition of the Armenian Genocide was considered by the commission on history, culture and education, which made a positive decision, the "Sputnik Armenia" reports.

The Armenian Genocide is recognized by such states as Argentina, Belgium, Vatican, Greece, Canada, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Uruguay, France, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland. The authorities of Turkey do not treat mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire as genocide.
