Prosecutor general lodges protest against presidential decree

President Vladislav Ardzinba issued a decree today to hold the second round of the presidential election in the republic. Prosecutor General of the Republic of Abkhazia Rauf Korua has filed a protest with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Abkhazia against the presidential decree "On the Second Round of the Election of President of the Republic of Abkhazia", reported a Caucasian Knot correspondent.

In his protest filed with the Supreme Court, Rauf Korua stated: "This presidential decree is ungrounded and illegal."

It is noted in Mr Korua's protest that according to the Abkhazian Central Election Commission, Sergey Bagapsh, who won 50.08% of the vote, was elected president of the republic. "On October 28, the panel of judges for common pleas of the Supreme Court determined to recognize as grounded the Commission's decision concerning the protocol on the election results under which Bagapsh was elected Abkhazian president," reads the prosecutor's document.

Commenting on the protest, Maria Palia, an official of the Economy and Law Department in the Abkhazian Presidential Administration, said that "to lodge a protest against the decree issued by the Akbhazian president is the Abkhazian prosecutor general's political step not related to the law," reported the Caucasian Knot correspondent.
