A former municipal deputy from Yeysk has been added to the register of foreign agents
The Russian Ministry of Justice has added Yeisk activist and former district council member Alexander Korovayny* to the register of foreign agents. The activist himself recalled that he had previously been recognized as "the best young politician in the Krasnodar Territory."
On December 8, 2021, the Yeisk District Council stripped independent deputy Alexander Korovayny* of his powers. The reason given was a violation of anti-corruption legislation, which Korovayny* himself denied. Formally, the initiative came from the Kuban Governor, but it was backed by district authorities who want to curb independent deputies' fight against abuses, Korovayny* stated on December 2, 2021. He asked his colleagues to postpone the meeting to prepare objections, but the council members voted against it .
The Russian Ministry of Justice today updated its register of foreign agents, including former Yeisk District Municipal Council deputy Alexander Korovayny*.
According to the Ministry of Justice, Korovayny* "disseminated false information" about the decisions and policies of the Russian authorities, as well as about the Russian electoral system. He also spoke out against the actions of the Russian military in Ukraine and collaborated with other foreign agents and so-called "undesirable organizations," according to a statement on the Ministry of Justice's website. The statement also notes that the politician does not live in Russia.
Commenting on the Ministry of Justice's decision, Korovayny* himself recalled that exactly ten years ago, he was awarded the "diploma of the best young politician in the Krasnodar Krai." "I won the debate on constitutional amendments, back when it wasn't fashionable. And in terms of my knowledge of the Constitution, I won first the competition, then the debate," SotaVision* quotes him as saying.
The activist disputes his status. "I'm not a foreign agent, but rather, those who put me on this list are foreign agents," he stated.
Korovainy* also noted that FSB representatives had previously offered him some "unofficial agreements" regarding publications on his Telegram channel, which has over 1,100 subscribers. He did not specify the exact nature of the offer.
